I want to give you 10 quick tips for taking better digital photos. Simple as that. Just read on.

1. Know your camera

Today's digital cameras already have automatic shooting modes that help you make better photos. However, if you want to make really great photos, such that make an impact, you will have to learn more about your camera. Study your manual and master your camera. Only then you will know which settings to use when needed.

2. Shoot early in the morning or late in the evening

The quality of light can vary greatly from when the sun comes up in the morning to when it sets in the evening. Usually you get the best results if you start early in the morning or around one hour before the sunset.

The best sunlight is often found an hour or less before sunset until sunset or a few minutes after sunset. This time is often referred to as the golden hour.

When light is low in the sky, it gives wonderful depth to your photographs because of the shadows that it creates. This is great time for landscape photography.

3. Appreciate bad weather conditions

Bad weather can yield opportunities that good weather with blue skies can't. Look for dramatic clouds. They make images much more interesting than blue skies. Clouds can also be very helpful because they can diffuse bright sun and reduce the overall light intensity.

4. Use the histogram

One of the most useful features found on digital cameras is the histogram. It's a graphical chart that shows the brightness levels of an image. The right side of the chart represents the lightest tones and the left side represents the darkest tones in your photo. The middle part represents all the tones in between.

You should try to produce a histogram in which the entire hump is somewhere in the center of the chart, or better yet, avoid producing histograms that have the entire hump on one side. These images are either over-exposed or underexposed.

5. Move closer and focus on details

Beginner photographers tend to stand to far away from the center of interest. As you will get more and more experienced, you will see that detail photos are often more interesting than full-subject shots.

Moving closer and capturing just part of a subject enables you to put emphasis on the detail. Now the viewer will know what to focus his or her attention on and won't get lost.

6. Take a walk

When you get on location, take a time. Walk around the subject. Look for all the different photo angles and find the best. Take your time and think about the composition.

7. Fill the frame

Zoom in or move closer to your object. Crop out the bits that don't add anything to your picture. You don't want to much sky on your pictures, unless of course you are shooting clouds or something interesting on the sky.

8. Always have your camera near you

You never know when a perfect photo opportunity is going to present itself. That's why you always have to be prepared.

9. Experiment

Take many photographs. With digital camera you can take them as many as you want. Try different settings and learn how they affect the image. Try to shoot the same subject from different perspective. You will discover that you can get really interesting pictures if you lower yourself and shoot from lower positions. Things will appear bigger and more interesting.

10. Study EXIF data

Whenever you take a picture, your digital camera records some useful information along with the image. This is called EXIF data. Among other data, your camera records settings such as shutter speed, aperture, program mode, ISO speed, white balance setting, flash information, and more.

Take your time and when you examine the images you took also examine the EXIF data. You will learn a lot from it. You will find out why photos are the way they are.
